STORMY WEATHER

STORMY WEATHER

by Sharleen Cooper Cohen
* Suggested by LENA HORNE, ENTERTAINER published by Chelsea House

Lena Horne, a legendary beauty and one of the world’s greatest entertainers, electrified audiences wherever she performed; nightclubs, movies, concerts and television shows. The first black pin-up girl and movie star, the first black featured on the cover of a national magazine, she blazed a trail for countless African American performers who came after her.

But success did not come without sacrifice. She fought constant battles between her career, marriage and motherhood. She faced prejudice in her personal life and in her professional life. Blacklisted, kicked out of the USO and suspended by MGM, she succeeded against all odds.

Because her private life was scrupulously guarded, the public was unaware of the struggles Lena endured or the indignities she suffered. Nor did anyone know about the tragedies that nearly destroyed her as a woman and an entertainer. Stormy Weather is that story, the story of a survivor, told against a musical backdrop.
